On 1st February, 1915, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line trenches at Messines to the south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 4th February. On 3rd February, the battalion diary recorded that there was some shelling during the day and that one 18 pounder shell hit C Company’s parapet and ‘blew off the head’ of George Cook.
